Rocky Top Refuge

Daihoji Zen Temple is located within Rocky Top Refuge and is the monatsic training center for Clear Mind Zen. It is also the residence of the abbot and his wife Judy. The Clear Mind Zen network offers quarterly weekend sesshins and monthly Zazenkai. Zen training through retreat is its primary function.

The Refuge is open to all and visitors are welcome. We can provide very limited overnight accomodations. It is requested that you call before coming as the drive to the Refuge is long and sometimes hazardous.

The telephone number is: 505-521-3711.

Sesshins begin at 7:00 PM on Fridays and conclude after services and lunch on Sundays. They consist of Zazen (sitting meditation), Kinhin (walking meditation), Samu, (work meditation), Dakusan (personal interview with the abbot), and Personal Development Practice, which might include art, poetry, reading, exercise (horseback riding, hiking, or running), journal keeping, and animal care.

Zazenkai begin at 10:00 AM and conclude at 4:00 PM. Activities are similar to those for sesshin.

The Refuge is located on six acres of remote land thirteen miles off Highway 82 near Cloudcroft, New Mexico. It is off the electrical grid, but are fully powered through solar energy. All meals are vegetarian and are prepared on a wood-burning cookstove.

Participants and visitors share in all of the Refuge activities including chopping wood, carrying water, animal care, cleaning, and food preparation.

The daily schedule begins at 5:30 AM. Zazen is at 6:00 AM and at 9:00 PM. The day concludes at 10:00 PM.
